Dr. Laura Kaufman Mowry, teacher/flutist

Ready to become a more confident flutist?
Pre-Collegiate
Pre-Collegiate Lessons are designed for advanced high-school flutists who want to take their playing to the next level. Lessons support not only technical and musical growth, but also the personal confidence and discipline that carry into every area of a student’s life. Students in the program will: -Build confidence and ease in performance situations -Develop efficient, effective practice strategies tailored to their needs -Prepare successfully for District Band, SRO, All-State, and youth orchestra auditions -Gain valuable performance experience with competitions and public performances -Receive guidance and preparation for pursuing a music major or minor in college Each student receives individualized support to help them reach their personal goals—whether that means excelling in auditions, standing out in ensembles, or preparing for a future in music.
Adults
I love working with adult students of all levels and backgrounds—whether you’re reconnecting with the flute after many years away, playing regularly in community ensembles, or simply seeking the joy of making music for yourself. In lessons, the focus is on your goals. Together, we’ll build confidence, develop efficient practice strategies, and discover ways to make the flute feel more natural and expressive. Mistakes are never failures—they’re opportunities to explore, problem-solve, and grow. My role is to help you trust your own musical instincts, enjoy the process, and find more satisfaction in your playing. I offer two different tracks for Adult students: Private lessons and group lessons. Either might be a great fit if you: -Haven’t picked up the flute in 20+ years but are ready to find joy in music again -Are currently playing in local ensembles and want to reach the next level -Simply want to improve so you can enjoy music more fully For some learners, group lessons are also an option. I’d be happy to talk with you about what format might best support your goals—please reach out to schedule a free consultation!
Performance Coaching
Performance Coachings are designed for advanced flutists who want to sharpen their skills for auditions, competitions, recitals, or other high-stakes performances. These sessions are ideal whether you already study with a private teacher or simply want an outside perspective focused exclusively on performance readiness. Together, we’ll address the skills necessary for consistent, confident playing under pressure, including: -Coping effectively with performance anxiety -Developing strategies for consistency and expressive flexibility -Building strong habits of mental preparation Each coaching is tailored to your specific goals and upcoming performance. Some students find one session provides the fine-tuning they need, while others benefit from multiple meetings leading up to a major event. My goal is to help students turn their frustrations into their biggest strengths—and joy.
I’m here to help you feel confident, capable, and inspired—let’s start.

My students become confident musicians, creative thinkers, and masters of mindful practice. I believe that when we learn to practice with curiosity, we don’t just get better at music—we build lifelong problem-solving skills. A mistake isn’t something to fear; it’s a chance to grow. Together, we ask, “How fascinating! Why did this happen? What can we learn from it?”

Equally central to my teaching is developing a gorgeous, flexible sound and rock-solid technique—the tools that allow true musical freedom. Technical work isn’t about robotic execution; it’s a creative process. Together, we explore how and why certain practice methods work, building both technical fluency and confidence.

We also explore essential questions together: How do we manage frustration? How do we stay motivated? How do we practice with purpose? Finding answers to these questions opens the door to remarkable growth—not only as flutists, but as lifelong learners.
